There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.― Sophia Loren
Lately I’m a tad sweary. I want to apologize to my mom because she is my number one reader. However, she knows I’m my own woman because she raised me to be exactly this and more. I have always hated those fucking 40 under 40 lists. To begin, if you’ve ever been on one I don’t want to take away from your accomplishments. You succeeded at something and I am proud of you. But personally, I’ve never seen the type of 40 under 40 list that appeals to me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to honor an entrepreneur or leader. However, I think society has long mistaken who we need to acknowledge and elevate for their power and influence.
What happens when we forge these lists is that we set standards for what we believe is the measure of success and qualify it by age. It’s here where I take issue and struggle. Give me a 40 under 40 for the ordinary and real people in my life because that’s where I draw inspiration from. Or better yet, give me a 40 over 40.
My brother Jon recently sent me a tweet about Grandma Moses, an artist who didn’t begin painting until 78. I hope we start talking and writing more about age and its possibilities versus its restrictions.
Tomorrow I’m beginning my letter writing campaign to Dan Fogelman, Maria Shriver, the folks at Walt Disney, and Reese Witherspoon. If you haven’t looked into my internship goal, now’s the time. Here’s to making our own lists and defining how we measure success and worth!
